Welcome to my web site

I’ve created this site to document the business side of who I am and what I do.  I’ve been at this for a while, so I may have insights that you as my reader will find useful, and if not, at least I hope to engage you for at least a brief while.

I’m limiting this site to my business and technical career, even though all of us are much more important than the label we carry to get a paycheck.  In fact, that’s a struggle each of us face in our jobs: how do we bring only the right parts of ourselves to bear on the sterilized definition of our work role?  When we bring too little of ourselves, we fail to achieve at the level we know we can.  When we bring too much of ourselves, we find we cannot sustain our level of achievement, and we open ourselves to emotional bruising from the fundamentally impersonal nature of the business world.

At the same time, I can’t cut myself up the same way I carve a holiday turkey. (I have no desire to experience the same preparations that are done to the turkey before the carving begins.)  Instead, I have no choice but to bring all of me to the job, and the same is true for my co-workers and team members.  We all need to find ways to be true to our whole selves as we work, yet expose only the parts of ourselves that are appropriate for and useful to the job roles we perform.  Good leadership helps others find this balance, and good leaders exhibit these traits.

In the same way, I intend to make this web site true to who I am while revealing the parts of my being that apply to a career setting.  At times, I’m sure that I will leak bits of my Christian faith, my music passions, and my love for my family—you’d find it hard to accept me as a real person if these were entirely absent.  However, it is my promise to you that I respect you as an interested reader enough to focus on the subjects that have drawn you to this site, so that we together find insights for improving our effectiveness and our satisfaction in our careers.
